The Starting Point for the Gear Cascade
Each Thursday morning during the WindowDressers community build season (late September through mid November) our delivery professional, Zeke leaves his midcoast Maine home in a U-Haul rental truck bound for Norwich, VT. He departs bright and early around 6 a.m. to make his estimated arrival time of 11 a.m. The U-Haul is loaded with jigs, gear, frame kits and supplies needed to construct WindowDressers inserts at one of twenty-two different community builds across Vermont and western New Hampshire.
Why Norwich you may ask! Norwich has been determined to be a central location for the Vermont and western New Hampshire communities hosting WindowDressers builds due to its close proximity to the I-91 and I-89 highways. The gear cascade starts and ends in Norwich. Teams from throughout Vermont and western New Hampshire pick up insert frame kits and all of the supplies needed to build inserts for households in their communities at Norwich. The gear cascade is a well coordinated plan used for the movement of gear and jigs throughout the area during the busy late summer/fall season. Each “leg” of the cascade uses a set of gear/jigs for about a week and then transports the gear to the next community build location. The first community in each leg receives the gear/jigs in Norwich on a Thursday morning and after using for a week moves the gear/jigs and any remaining supplies to the next community in the cascade on the next Thursday morning. The last community in each leg returns the gear/jigs and all remaining supplies to Norwich at the end of the season where it is all taken back to the WindowDressers production facility in Maine to be checked out, repaired/modified and stored until the next community build season. Representation of the gear cascade is shown as follows:
Success of the gear cascade relies on close coordination and communication between the community build teams as well as the program manager, the production facility and delivery professional. In 2023, the gear cascade was executed without a hitch due mainly to the excellent teamwork of the community build volunteers and WindowDressers staff. We were also blessed with good weather!
